Ultraviolet (UV) radiation, as we commonly refer to it, can be divided into UVA, UVB, and UVC bands. The band that can directly break up oxygen molecules is the 185nm band. Its energy is sufficient to break the chemical bonds of O₂, and the freed oxygen atoms then combine with other oxygen molecules to form ozone. Many cheap lamps on the market, in order to reduce costs, use ordinary quartz material and do not perform any band filtering. The 185nm UV radiation that should be blocked escapes, causing problems in scenarios where ozone is completely unnecessary.
